Background on Juul and Vaping
The makers of JUUL marketed their products as an easy way to quit smoking cigarettes. They said JUUL was a healthier alternative. And made the devices easy to conceal, especially from parents. The manufacturer added sweet, fruity flavors to appeal to kids and downplayed the copious amounts of nicotine contained in each JUUL pod. Now, we’re finding out JUULing is much more addictive and dangerous than the industry lead us to believe. Though vaping products are still relatively new, six deaths have already been attributed to vaping and 450 lung illnesses reported.
The FDA Has Issued a Warning To JUUL and Is Investigating
Recently, images of unconscious teens in hospitals hooked up to respirators have shaken the nation. The FDA is investigating and has issued a warning letter to JUUL. The Department of. Health and Human Services has vowed to clear the market of flavored e-cigarettes. Lawsuits against JUUL are being filed.
Kids Who JUUL Have Higher Nicotine Levels
The makers of JUUL infused their tobacco pods with Continine, a chemical that facilitates the body’s absorption of nicotine. And instead of converting liquid nicotine into an aerosol for inhalation like most vaping products, JUUL packed their pods with liquids containing high concentrations of a modified salt form of nicotine. This modified salt form also facilitates the body’s absorption of nicotine. Independent studies have confirmed that nicotine levels are higher in the urine of JUUL users. The BMJ warned of the high risk of JUUL addiction in a study published in September 2018.
63% of 15-24 Olds Are Unaware JUUL Always Contains Nicotine
The Truth Initiative released results of a survey in December 2018 about the use of JUUL among teens and adults. The results were startling. A majority of 15-24 year olds didn’t know JUULs always contain nicotine. There was a 400% increase in JUUL use among 18-21 year olds between July 2017 and October 2018. 15-17 year olds are 16X more likely to use JUULs than people between the ages of 25-34.
Potential Side Effect of Vaping
Side effects of vaping can be life threatening. Some have already died. Vaping has been linked to reports of:
- Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack)
- Lung Disease
- Advanced Asthma
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
- Nicotine Addiction
Mooney Lawyers Are Investigating.
When large corporations knowingly violate the public’s trust, they must be held accountable. In this case, the violation of trust appears to be particularly egregious: marketing a product as safe when manufacturers didn’t know whether the product was harmful or not, purposely targeting kids with deceptive marketing, being less than forthcoming about the amount of nicotine contained in pods and the highly addictive nature of the product. The mass tort legal team at Mooney law is reviewing the allegations and evidence right now. And we’re accepting JUUL cases.
