FCBA Honors Darryl W. Cunningham with Pro Bono Award

The Franklin County Bar Association recognized attorney Darryl W. Cunningham with its Pro Bono Award during the association’s annual pro bono luncheon on October 20, 2026. The luncheon also honored the attorneys who provide free civil legal services to individuals and families in need throughout Franklin County.

Darryl Cunningham practices family law and criminal defense at Mooney Law. He received the Pro Bono Award in recognition of the time and legal expertise he has contributed to pro bono cases in Franklin County.

Darryl has represented clients in Protection from Abuse matters as part of Franklin County’s efforts to assist victims of domestic violence following the closure of Women in Need’s law office. His work has made a measurable difference for individuals seeking protection and legal representation during difficult circumstances.

The Honorable Jeremiah D. Zook of the 39th Judicial District said, “The Court has experienced an unprecedented rise of self-represented parties in recent years, particularly in custody and protection from abuse matters. These parties are rarely, if ever, adequately prepared to present their cases to the Court. The Court, as the neutral arbiter, cannot help either party, so unfortunately the Court must often make serious decisions impacting family dynamics without the best evidence before it. Attorneys who step into this void by donating their time and expertise to ensure the Court has the best evidence before it has a dramatic impact on the quality of justice served in Franklin County. Recognition of those attorneys’ efforts is not only appropriate, but also in the highest tradition of those bearing the title “attorney at law.” Attorney Cunningham is the next in a long line of Franklin County attorneys sacrificing a portion of their valuable time in exchange for helping a litigant in need, without financial benefit. On behalf of the Court, I thank Attorney Cunningham for the pro bono time he has spent, particularly in protection from abuse matters. Congratulations on this well-earned award!”

Judy Hale, Esquire, Director of Pro Bono Services for the PA Bar Association presented Darryl with the Pro Bono Award and stated, “There is no right to counsel for most civil legal matters, and many of our low-income neighbors are forced to go without legal representation in disputes where they risk losing their job, their livelihood, their home, or their children; or when seeking a protection order from abusive behavior. Nationally, legal aid organizations must turn away half of the requests they receive due to limited resources; many people are over-income for legal aid but unable to afford an attorney, or have a legal issue outside of legal aid priorities. This is the justice gap. Thankfully, many attorneys provide pro bono legal services to help close this gap. On behalf of the PBA, I applaud the impressive contributions of attorney Darryl W. Cunningham to provide meaningful access for fair outcomes to Franklin County residents who are unable to afford an attorney.”

Janice Hawbaker, Pro Bono Committee Chair of the Franklin County Bar Association said, “Our county has always stepped up to the plate and provided legal services to those in need who can not afford representation. We are fortunate to have two separate legal services, Franklin County Legal Services as well as MidPenn Legal Services. In addition, many of our Bar members have provided pro bono services. They have gone above and beyond to help those in need who are facing daunting legal challenges.”

Gloria Keener, Executive Director of Franklin County Legal Services stated, “Thank you for volunteering your expertise and your time as pro bono volunteer attorneys. Thank you for reaching into the most difficult situations and bringing hope. Thank you for your commitment and sacrifice in helping those in need through legal services. Each case is more than just a legal matter – it’s a life transformed, a future secured, and a family protected.”
